Who says vegetarians and vegans can’t enjoy BBQ sandwiches?! Well, now that I’ve discovered jackfruit, I can say we totally can!! Any time there’s an option to veganize a traditional meat-centered dish, I’m all about it!
So who would’ve known that there was a tropical fruit on the other side of the world that could mimic the consistency and texture of pulled pork and chicken? Well, I was amazed at the way my BBQ sandwiches turned out when I used jackfruit. All I added was homemade BBQ sauce and a bun. That was it!
Slowly but surely, the weather has been getting nicer around here. In true celebration, my husband used our grill for the first time this year. It was awesome! He enjoyed a steak. I, on the other hand, still wanted the warm weather experience too! So, I decided to make this little gem. 🙂
I went searching at Whole Foods to find canned jackfruit but to my disappointment, they don’t carry it! I was shocked actually. Since I don’t live close to any Asian grocery stores, I decided to purchase the jackfruit from Amazon. They actually had packs of 4 which came in handy once I began to make these sandwiches!
After seeing jackfruit for the first time, I noticed that there was actually three pieces to each ‘wedge’. First, there was a center circular core piece. Discard this as it doesn’t ‘pull’. The second part is the outer flat core. I cut this piece off too. The remaining part is the good stuff. It peels apart and has the look and texture of pulled meat. From the picture below, you can see that the fruit in the bowl is what remained from the two cans I opened! I was really glad I bought a pack of 4 from Amazon!
Any BBQ sauce will do for this sandwich, but I really liked making a homemade version. It was tangy, sweet and pepper-y.
Have you ever used Jackfruit? If so, what types of recipes have you made with it? I’d love to hear!
